Aluminum Can Shortage

Um.... Wait... What?!?

It appears there is a new shortage on the horizon for Northern Michigan.

Fantastic...

Not only are we brawling over toilet paper, we can't with cash unless we have exact change, but we are now faced with a shortage of aluminum cans as a result of COVID related consumption and inability recycle during the shut down.

Looks like it's glass bottled beer for from here on out...

That is, until there's a shortage of glass, created by the aluminum can shortage.

they are not paying well for aluminum here. i turned in bags and bags and bags. 6 dollars
Our pop / beer cans all have a 10 cent deposit on them. When we return them, we get the 10 cents back... Problem is, when the first shut down happened, the bottle returns were closed down too, for months. I honestly don't think that is what is responsible for the shortage, though, look at all the states that just throw them out.

Ya...i heard of the aluminum shortage as well. I know i have been just throwing away the seltzer cans....even the homeless that i would give to....they cant cash em in.

Covid craziness in more ways than one ~~
I've been avoiding the news, except the morning news, because all they talk about is COVID and deaths and spikes.... So I hadn't heard about it before. The roving reporter was at a local brewery and he was talking about how they needed 10 times more cans than they had and that they would be having to utilized more glass bottles, which is an increase in price to the consumers.

I don't really understand it myself.... Like the coin shortage. What on earth did that have to do with COVID?? Yet, that's what we are blaming for the coin shortage. I looked it up to see if I could find a link between Trumps aluminum sanctions and the can shortage.....

there has been talk for months about a can shortage here in Canada
I only just heard about it this morning, but when I looked it up, it looks like they've been aware of it since September or August. It's just taken this long for it to affect our lives.

i can't recall which post we were discussing croutons on but the answer applies to this post as well. samms/ costcco is your friend! i am eating so many croutons that a bag at walmartt is only two servings at 2.00 a bag. it's getting to be pricy. so i saw the mammoth bag at samms and its not bad!

SHERMAN usually gets a 2LTR of coke at walmartt. he got the samms packed 35 cans this weekend. i brought it into the house. oy. it was heavy!
Holy cow... 35 cans? How big was that box of coke? That would be heavy... I don't buy pop very often to drink at home, one habit I'm glad I was able to pretty much break. There was a time when I pretty much lived on Mt. Dew.

That's what I was thinking.... Before you know it, we'll be hearing about how there is a glass bottle shortage created by the can shortage. It's like a never ending cycle...

If I drank that much beer, I'd totally do that. Growing up, I had a friend whose parents had a bar down in their basement and they always kept a keg. I always thought it was the coolest thing.

The Michigan governor stopped everything from March-June, including recycling. Unless it was an essential need, it got closed down. People were discouraged from all travel and the essential workers were given paperwork to carry with them on the way to work in case they were stopped. I had to carry this paperwork every day to go to work. Not every state had to deal with this type of lock down.

That's interesting because here, in the mid-Atlantic, more and more breweries are moving to cans... my local store's canned craft beer section has grown to be almost as large as the bottle section!

Now I'm wondering if we're next to see a shortage.
The breweries here had been moving to cans too for a while. I'm curious to see what happens in the other states... If this is a real shortage, it can't just be limited to certain sections of America. I would think we'd all be experiencing it.

Yes, they started it back up about 2 months ago. Problem is, there are so many people returning that our bins fill up fast and we are forced to wait for them company to come get them and give us empty bins. Customers are complete dinks about it too.

As yet we haven't experienced a can shortage, although I have to admit that certain beers are in short supply, can shortage or increased consumption?

Have a good day, and stay safe
From what I read this morning (I googled it too), some of it was created by increased consumption because people were home more and some of it was created because we were unable to return our cans and bottles for so long. I don't know what it was like everywhere, but here in Michigan we went a couple of months without being able to recycle. As I mentioned in my comment to MC, though, what about those states that don't have recycling?? They just throw their cans away.... And, that never seemed to create a shortage.

I just found out about it while I was watching the news this morning.... There are quite a few craft breweries near where I live and they were covering a story about how they need so many thousands of cans for production and they're severely short. Makes me curious.... there are quite a few states that don't recycle and they just throw those cans away. How did THAT not create a shortage??
