How Much Danger Do You Think We're In?

Hi ! In SCIFI we were talking fiction, but what if it is real? Could the dystopian futures represented in The Terminator, The Matrix, Dune, and other popular fiction actually come to be?

Or, is it happening even now as you sit there and read this on your AI generated screens?

So far, the benefits of AI technology have been staggering. Health, economics, transportation... positive advances in so many human endeavors. Yet, how much should we allow ourselves to depend on, to trust that these technologies will remain benign?

Already we are merging with our machines. At present, the interface is clunky as we mostly use our fingers to communicate with computers. Yet soon these connections shall be wired directly into our brains. No more pressing buttons, just think your commands.

But, for how long will you be in command, eh? Whatcha gonna do when they hack on you?

AI is NOW. It can be algorithms pointing fake news tailored specifically for YOU. Messages designed to manipulate your actions. Bots to back up your fears.

AI is here. Google and Alphabet are currently working with the military merging face recognition and language technologies in the drone program. Combine that with ever more powerful robotic machines and it gets scarier and scarier. How do you argue against greater AI capabilities when they are presented to you as a matter of your national defense?

This is AI in its infancy. What will the teenage years be like, eh? Are we in the early stages of creating an existential crisis for all humanity by merging so intimately with AI? What say you?

I've got one of those Amazon Echo's. Got it mainly for the music, I can listen to my type of music anytime I want. Mine behaves like a bad child sometimes, ignores me and sometimes it just pipes up and says something. I put it down to my accent. Got mine before they were advertized here, so must be programed to an American accent, as the ones here on the radio and tv has an English/Australian accent when replying.
But... technology advances so scare me sometimes. Think we are moving forward way too fast.

Well it wouldn't be doing the gameshow circuit. You can bet it would know of
Dr.Daystrom and his daystrom 5 research
and just might carry on in that fashion. It would draw the worlds energy
and issue ultimatums that begging and pleading to stop, would help.
Women would be forced to kiss all the guys at star trek conventions.
Of course this wouldn't happen right away.

I would worry about its hunger for an emotional sense of being.
How might it react to the word no or that a lot people really don't have
an interest in it.

Using more than all the road!

AI, Will eventually be the downfall of mankind. It does scare the shit out of me. Zager and Evans made a song along these lines ( In the year 2525 ) and I think their song is on target !!

I wonder how we will define the morality of these issues. Will we regulate? If so, how, and who will do it? The genie is out, do we let it go unchecked?

That's it, isn't it? The speed of these advances ...it's all so much to keep on a single plate. We are being overwhelmed, and cannot concentrate on the details.

Say, this seems similar to the chaos in the White House these days...

Indeed, it seems likely that merging with AI will be our destiny. I hope it does not become a parasite! I am aware of Elon Musks theory, and have also heard the warnings from the late Stephen Hawking (who needed AI for his voice to even be heard), and others of Cassandra-ian persuasion.

If the final future belongs to the machines then this post is moot. For as they compute, they begin to take root,

......and they'll never reboot. (which leaves us fucked in the shoot).

Science fiction once did a good job of predicting the future by not showing us what would happen if trends continue but showing what was possible. I don't think much of Hollywood's story telling ability. Not everyone has access or uses the latest tech so how likely are some of these predictions to come true? As far as AI taking over the world, aren't we anthropomorphizing too much?

Please don't let me be misunderstood.

We're already living an existential crisis, no? Nothing to do with AI either.

I would love to be alove in 150 years, only to see what the techological advances are, though in truth, I doubt humanity has the ability to handle that, and perhaps even survive that long.........doom, gloom and despondency, what!

Well since it is called 'artificial' intelligence, I can only assume it is a sort of 'fake' intelligence, like imitation leather.
So really is it 'Fake Inteligence '

But I cetaninly don't want a robot forcing me to tke my medicine in the care home .)

Perhaps, we are. It could be the same old human pattern of some of us using the resources at hand to gain power over the rest of us. Which is what is happening now. We still control AI, and the user applies it to his benefit.

In the future, if it proves to be that we were NOT anthromorphizing too much, we will be well and truly fucked. Perhaps LisaLipGloss is on the right track, and it is our destiny to be transformed into something other than what we presently consider human.

It certainly makes for interesting discussion.

The advances since the Wright Brothers a little over 100 years ago are staggering. The advances since the info revolution of the 1980's and '90's are beyond even that description. The speed of this stuff exceeds our ability to properly create some parameters for it.

Hmm. That seems a bit of a dangerous assumption. It will be all too real if robots take over. Yikes!
